NICHOLAS "NICK" AVERY
Nicholas “Nick” Avery grew up on the streets, but he was intent on not staying there for long. Even as a child, he had a peculiar gift in that he was able to seemingly at will make himself invisible. Now, he tells himself that he isn’t really becoming invisible, he’s just blending into the background and people are amazingly blind to things right in front of their noses. So becoming a thief–a very good thief–was an easy career choice. Though he has always only stolen from people who could afford it, people who are obscenely wealthy, in fact. And this has made him wealthy, too, and able to take care of his ragtag team of associates.
Now known as a gentleman thief who can steal anything, Nick is recruited by a group of billionaires who are outraged and furious that their new Vampire overlords have not recognized their inherent worth and made them into immortal beings themselves. If the Vampires won’t give them the gift of immortality they’ll take it. That’s where Nick comes in.
It seems that the world’s governments have also wanted to harness the powers that come along with Vampirism, but not the fealty that engenders in every Vampire towards their Master and to the Vampire King Daemon. So they’ve been experimenting secretly on captured Vampires to make Master-less Vampires. These Master-less Vampires have all of the Vampire gifts of increased strength, speed, rapid healing, immortality and more, but they aren’t beholden to anyone. All it requires is a shot of a serum and a Second Life can be anyone’s. The billionaires want Nick to steal a sample of this serum for them.
Considering the amount they’re paying him to do this, Nick has no compunctions about taking on the US government, the angry Vampires and anyone else who thinks to get in his way. After all, he can just disappear from sight if they even catch sight of him in the first place.
But while Nick makes it into the secret government lab, he soon finds that things are not as advertised. These Master-less Vampires are not the same as the urbane beings that come on talk shows and talk about their hundreds of years of immortal life. These beings are insane, violent and should be put down. After Nick is bitten by one in his frantic escape from the government facility, he fears that no amount of money can ever make him right again, because he’s begun to change…
