QUINN MALLORY
Quinn Mallory has been able to speak to the dead for as long as he can remember, which has served him particularly well since his parents died when he was only a baby. Being able to converse with his parents after death allowed him to find closure. Death, after all, isn’t the end but only a transition to whatever comes next. This comfort is something he’s prided himself on giving to the grieving people who come to his grandparents’ funeral home.
So when the Vampires revealed their existence to humanity–along with their many supernatural gifts from telekinesis to invisibility–Quinn thought that he’d be able to share his gift more freely with those in mourning and extend that feeling of peace and certainty to everyone. But that’s not how things have worked out. Not at all.
Instead, humans have now become increasingly divided into two groups. The first are those who are eager to take their own lives and continue onto that something next as fast as possible. The second are those who are absolutely terrified of death and will do anything to stay in this life. After all, if death were all it was cracked up to be then the ancient Vampires would have abandoned their Second Lives long ago, wouldn’t they?
Quinn blames the Kaly Vampires–and, most especially, Vampire Lord Caemorn Losus–for this state of affairs. The Kaly Vampires are all about spirits and what comes next, but they are notoriously tight-lipped about anything they’ve discovered about the existence of the soul and the afterlife. Instead of using their knowledge to help humanity overcome their fears, they’ve just stoked them.
So imagine his luck when Caemorn comes into his funeral home one evening! Except it isn’t lucky for Quinn at all for Caemorn has no intention of hearing his well-meaning criticisms and suggestions, but instead wants to take Quinn’s soul. Because, according to the Kaly Vampire, Quinn isn’t a complete person after all, but a reincarnated slice of Caemorn’s own soul and he’d like it back now.
