I did like Abaddon's name. It looked rather awesome. But then I was looking for names today, because I love naming the random characters I end up drawing, and I found out what his name meant.

Now I just feel sorry for him, and for the story line. T.T

Here's what I got from 20000-names.com

ABADDON: Anglicized form of Greek Abaddōn, meaning "destruction, ruination." In the New Testament bible, this is the name of the place of destruction. And it is a name given to the angel of the bottomless pit, the Destroyer Apollyon.

Just for more info, I looked up Apollyon too;

APOLLYON: Anglicized form of Greek Apollyōn, meaning "destroyer." In the New Testament bible, this is the name of the angel-prince of the infernal regions, the minister of death and author of havoc on earth. He is also known by the name Abaddon.

Where are you taking us Raythe? Hopefully not to the bottomless pit... T.T

P.S.

I still love the story anyways, and the character. The name just scares me a bit more now. XD

You know, I went through something similar, I was talking to my sister WAY long ago about how much I loved the story and I mentioned Abaddon, and she was like "Seriously? Someone named their character that?" then explained the meaning of the name and other situations she's seen it used. It does make you curious where Raythe is going, but I am not sure any other name would fit him. Abaddon is just... right.

It makes sense to me. Everything in the story hints at Abaddon being either the cause or the catalyst for what happened to the Kin. What bugs me more is the lack of original names rather than all these typical modern (or mythic, as the case may be) western names. It never really sits right with me when a vampire who's been alive for Goddes knows how long is called something that's easy on the tongue of someone who's alive today. We're millions of miles away in space, in a ship, supposedly far off in the future. Yet, at the same time, everything is very typical of the 21st century. Same mindsets, same taboos, same values, same names.

Perhaps they are actually different and the kin just came up with morals/names that we humans can understand. It would be hard enough for us to understand an utterly different culture if it suddenly appeared out of the sky, and strange names would only make us more... uncomfortable with the mere concept of communicating with aliens. When I think of it like that, it would make sense that they would find "Earth" names for us to associate with them. Is 'Kin' not an earth based name they found to use for our association? Also, particularly if you read Price for Passage, their morals, mindsets, ect. are very different. To me it seems like they are trying to CHANGE old customs that we humans found repulsive in order to better form an... alliance with us. So the values that you see in The Abyss are more of what the Kin have created to make the humans feel more comfortable in the Kin presence, I think. Of course, this is all my opinion, but it is how I look at this issue.

It wouldn't be worse than going to China, or having a Russian person visit you. Languages and cultures are easily understood if you're just willing to. Don't be so quick to give humans small IQs. I don't change my name when I go abroad. I expect people to respect that I have a name already, just like I respect that they have their names, their values and their culture. I would be very wary of anyone changing their culture just to fit another's narrow mind, it always hints at darker things moving below surface.
