Lt. Anarion Gray

Anarion has a secret.  He is the only survivor of a series of drug trials run by human scientists and the vampiric Kin.  Unable to breed, the Kin are desperate to find a way to further their immortal race.  The drug trials were to create a hybrid, but they went terribly wrong.  Because of this, Anarion's parents, Mercy and Tranis, turned against the Kin and joined a resistance group.  But Anarion's greatest desire is to join the Kin Commander, Lord Abaddon's crew on the massive spaceship The Abyss.  He has loved Abaddon since he met him as a child and the Kin Commander offered to take him away.  Some believe the Kin Commander imprinted upon the boy, making Anarion unable to form romantic attachments to anyone else.

Anarion joined the human military and became a Ruin Jumper, which is a soldier that lands on ancient abandoned Kin homeworlds, defeats their defenses and then harvests their tech.  The most fabled of the forgotten Kin homeworlds, Black Heart, has been discovered and the Kin and humans have determined to mount a joint expedition there.  Anarion is one of the humans called upon to be a Ruin Jumper.  He will finally get his wish and join Lord Abaddon's crew on The Abyss.  Will his other fondest wish be granted?  Will he obtain the love of the vampire leader?

Lord Abaddon

Abaddon is the leader of the vampiric, immortal Kin people.  He is over 10,000 years old, but like all Kin, has no memory of what occurred before that time.  Some terrible incident wiped the Kin's memories clean.  Abaddon was behind the drug trials to create a hybrid and knows that Anarion is the closest thing to a child he will ever have, but he must possess the young Ruin Jumper in all ways.  He offered to take Anarion with him when he was a boy, but the risk of starting an all out war with the humans by taking the resistance leader's son as his own was too great.  Instead, he determined to keep close watch on Anarion and have the young man come to him when he was of age.  The Black Heart expedition is his chance.

Tranis Gray

Tranis was at one time a firm believer and supporter of the benefits of the bargain humanity had struck with the Kin.  He believed that with Kin help, humanity would be able to cure terrible diseases. This was hugely important to him, because his own son, Anarion, was deathly ill.   He was running a drug trial for the Kin, which he believed would lead to greater healing abilities in humans, not realizing the true goal.  In desperation to save his son's life, Tranis secretly place Anarion on the drug. Anarion was the only one to survive.  Every last human child died.  It was then he realized that the drug had a very different effect than the one he had been told about.  He took his wife and child and headed underground to join the resistance against the Kin.

Mercy Gray

Mercy is Anarion's mother.  She hates the Kin more than her husband does, but her reasons are less clear.  After Tranis is imprisoned for crimes against humanity, she takes over the running of the resistance.  Her son's decision to join the military and then The Abyss crew itself puts them in direct conflict.

Ran

Ran is a Kin Ruin Jumper who believes that all humans are food or bedmates, but nothing else.  His derision of Anarion leads him to threaten the other Ruin Jumper and perhaps kill the only child the Kin have had in 10,000 years.

Garin

Garin is a Kin Watch Commander.  She is fiercely loyal to Abaddon.  She finds herself playing the big sister role with Anarion onboard The Abyss.

Nico Flavian

Nico is a genius who joined the human military at the age of 16.  Now only 18 years old, he is Anarion's roommate and best friend.  The hyper kinetic teen has joined Anarion on The Abyss and is in charge of the blood supplies.
